Joy Behar’s Audition for ‘SNL’ in 1975: A Depressing Experience

Joy Behar, co-host of ABC’s The View, opened up about her audition for Saturday Night Live in 1975. Despite having a funny character to showcase, creator Lorne Michaels never laughed during her audition. Behar shared that Michaels explained he didn’t want to laugh and give the impression that she had secured a spot on the cast. Behar admitted that while it was a bit disheartening, she realized she wasn’t ready for the stress of a job like SNL. Ultimately, she didn’t get the job, which turned out to be a relief for her. Following her stand-up comedy beginnings, Behar went on to star in TV shows and films such as Baby Boom and Manhattan Murder Mystery. She later joined The View in 1997 and has been a panelist for most seasons. Behar left the show in 2013 but returned in 2015 with the persuasion of consultant Hilary Estey McLoughlin.
