After 15 years of entertainment, ShowPlace Icon Theater in South Loop has closed its doors for the last time. The iconic movie theater at Roosevelt Collection Shops, known for its plush seating and VIP experiences, has been a staple in the neighborhood since 2009. As one of the few remaining movie venues south of Downtown, its closure marks the end of an era for moviegoers in the area. The decision to shut down the theater comes as a result of the struggles faced by movie theaters and their parent companies during the pandemic, with more viewers turning to streaming services for their entertainment. Despite being the last of four theater complexes owned by Kerasotes ShowPlace Theatres, ShowPlace Icon Theater could not withstand the challenges brought on by the current landscape of the movie industry. The closure of the theater has left a void in the community, as residents mourn the loss of a beloved local establishment. As the curtains close on ShowPlace Icon Theater, the South Loop reflects on the memories created within its walls and looks towards the future of entertainment in the area.
