With heat index values reaching 113° and higher, sanitation workers are still out on the streets, picking up trash and ensuring that the city stays clean. Tony Dutter, Director of recruiting for Uribe Refuse Services, mentioned that crews are taking extra precautions to stay cool during this heat wave. They start their routes as early as 2 a.m. to try to beat the heat, and they are encouraged to stay hydrated with water and Gatorade. While the trucks do have air conditioning, the heat from the engine and hydraulics can make it even hotter inside. Despite the challenges, trash haulers are committed to their job and continue to work hard to keep Lincoln clean. As they navigate through the city, shaggers keep an eye out for yard sprinklers or generous neighbors with a running hose for a quick cool off. And although the heat may result in some unwanted guests like maggots in the trash, the dedication of these workers ensures that the city stays clean and garbage-free.
